Paul’s letter to the Galatians

New International Version

GALATIANS 1

No Other Gospel
6I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

10Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul Called by God

11I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. 12I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

My take: Do not fall into the teachings of salvation by works or the world’s views of peace and love and justice to win the approval of people. THEY ARE PERVERSIONS OF GOD’S GOSPEL WHICH COMES ONLY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. (Peace and love and flowers in your hair didn’t work in the past, I am old enough to have tried it.) TEACHING A FALSE GOSPEL WILL BRING GOD’S CURSE.  WE ARE NOT TO SEEK THE APPROVAL OF THE WORLD.

GALATIANS 3
The Law and the Promise

22But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

Children of God
26So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

My take:  Only faith in Christ overcomes sin. We all become heirs to the promises given to Abraham if we deny ourselves and accept the Lord Jesus Christ

GALATIANS 5
Freedom in Christ

1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Life by the Spirit
13You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

My take: We are free to live as we choose but should not use this freedom to gratify our own desires which will put us in direct conflict with the fruits of the Spirit and the kingdom of God. IF WE BELONG TO CHRIST WE HAVE CRUCIFIED OUR OWN DESIRES AND PASSIONS.

GALATIANS 6
Doing Good to All

1Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

My Take: Be gentle with believers who have fallen into sin. Carry each other’s burdens but be careful of falling away and accepting satan’s temptations while doing this. DON’T ARGUE WITH GOD, HE IS NOT MOCKED.
